Epilepsy
Epilepsy is a disease that affects the brain and can cause different types of seizures. A seizure can involve having a convulsion or losing part of your consciousness for a short or long time. The symptoms during the seizure and for a while afterwards vary depending on which part of the brain is affected. Epileptic seizures are therefore usually divided into two main types: generalized seizures, in which large parts of the brain are involved from the start of the seizure, and focal seizures, which start in a limited part of the brain.
The treatment of epilepsy usually consists of drugs called antiepileptic drugs. These medicines are preventive and reduce the risk of seizures as long as you take them regularly. Sometimes you need to take the medicine several times a day to achieve the desired effect.
If you suspect you have epilepsy or have been diagnosed, it is important to get the right care. At the neuroclinic, we can help you with both the assessment and treatment of epilepsy.
